“In The Shade of The Pines”
Solo show at Chandler House, Cape Town. Open 5th of January 2023 to 2nd of January
The third solo show by Jacques Viljoen at Chandler House further explores the city of Cape Town and its intersection with nature. The title, “In the Shade of the Pines” at once evokes the lazy lazy comfort of Cape summer afternoons, while hinting at the ever-present shadow of colonial history which continues to shape the city. The show also includes a copy after J.J Shannon, completed during Viljoen’s concurrent residency at Iziko National Gallery.

“The light and weight of home”
2 - 23 September 2021 at artist’s admin, 79 roeland street, Cape town
All paintings where done from life, on location (en plein air) in the year after returning to Cape Town after a decade abroad. I had spent much of my time studying painting and drawing in London and Florence before the Pandemic reached Europe, and this experience has helped me see home in a way that I used to take for granted.
Contact me directly to purchase an artwork, or from Artist Admin if viewing the work in person. All online prices do not include VAT.

““The chances are that, if you stay at home and say something about your own period, life and environs, your art will be a sincere effort and your conscious clear. Paint Long Island and say more about it than any other man, and you will be a great artist. You will glorify yourself and Long Island. Remember that your own period will be just as picturesque to posterity as the seventeenth century is to you. If you must travel to paint, at least know that a work of art depends, not upon time nor place, but upon something that springs from the inner man. Remember, too, that all great men are the result of their time and place.” ”
