The Tyler Keeping Watch
Oil on board
Size: 38cm x 29cm
During my residency, I met a young South African initiate, nervously waiting for his initiation ceremony to begin. While speaking to him, they Taylor came to get him, and invited me up to the lodge. However, the lodge door was as far as I could go, so I quickly painted the Taylor keeping watch while the meeting was happening, focusing on the door instead of him.

The Past Master
Oil on Book Cover
12cm x 10cm
Extract from book:
“A mason is obliged, by his tenure, to obey the moral law; and if he righteously understand The Art he will never be a stupid atheist nor an irreligious libertine. He, of all men, should best understand that God seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh at the outward appearance, but God looketh to the heart.”

Provincial Grand Lodge of West Yorkshire
Oil on hard cover book
24cm x 15cm
Extract from book:
“It has to be remembered that the Fraternity of the olden time guarded their archives with utmost jealousy, and barred, so far as possible, the record of knowledge of their proceedings from access by the outer world.
“Still, like beacons receding from us in the distance, there appear in view, through the mists of antiquity, evidence that Spiritual Masonry has in past ages shed its benign rays - dim at times, maybe, but true and steady - in the midst of the densest ignorance, bigotry, and superstition. The hand of time, the storms of civil tumult, and the clash of war, have not entirely eradicated these relics and traditions of our masonic forefathers.”

Instillation

“Both installations were a complete success in every way. There was a record gathering, notwithstanding The War, about 1400 Brethren being present to witness the installation of Right Worshipful Provincial Grand Master, and the brilliant scene in the hall is not likely soon to be forgotten by those who witnessed it.”
